Coworker gifts are a whole problem.
Too impersonal and it feels like you grabbed it on the way in. Too personal and suddenly you are the one who made things weird. There is a very narrow lane and most people just get a gift card and call it done.
I almost did that. And then I thought about my coworker Jamie for five minutes and realized I actually knew enough to do something real.
Jamie had been going through a rough stretch. New project, long hours, the kind of grinding period where you stop talking about anything except the work. Every time someone asked how they were doing, they said 'hanging in there' and moved on.
I noticed Jamie always had a specific tea at their desk. The same one. They made it every morning and again after lunch and it was the only ritual they seemed to protect. Everything else was chaos and there was the tea.
I found a really nice version of that tea. Like, the good version. The kind they would never buy for themselves because it felt extravagant for something they drank every day. I wrapped it with a note that said: you deserve the good tea.
Jamie laughed out loud when they read it. Like a real laugh, not a polite one.
They still bring it up sometimes. Not in a big way. Just occasionally they will reference it. The good tea. It became a shorthand for a whole period of time and a thing I noticed about them and a small message that they were worth the extra attention.
Coworker gifts do not have to be safe. They just have to be observant.

These work in a professional context but feel chosen. They say I was paying attention without saying anything too personal. That is the whole game.
