The Engagement Gift Before All the Big Ones

Engagement is a strange moment in gift-giving terms.

Everyone is thrilled for the couple and nobody quite knows what to give because the bridal shower is coming and the registry is coming and the wedding itself is coming and there is going to be so much occasion ahead that this early moment, the actual moment of the decision, sometimes gets swallowed by all the celebration that follows it.

I wanted to give my friend Lena something before all of that started.

Not for the wedding. For this moment specifically. The moment of yes. Before the planning and the decisions and the lists and the vendor emails and the questions about venues. Just the quiet week after she got engaged when it was still just hers and she had not yet been absorbed into the machinery of becoming a bride.

I thought about what she actually needed in that window.

I included a card that said: before the planning starts. This one is just about the yes.

She put it on immediately.

She said: this is the one I am going to wear every day. Not because it is the nicest thing. Because it is about the yes.

The best engagement gift is the one that says: I see the moment itself, not just the event it leads to.
