The Gift I Gave Before She Left the Country

When your closest friend moves to another country the word farewell does not cover it.

My friend Mia got a job in Amsterdam. A real one, the kind you cannot turn down. She had two months to wrap up her life here and she did it with the particular efficiency of someone who is trying not to feel everything they are actually feeling.

I watched her say goodbye to things without saying she was saying goodbye to them. The coffee shop where she worked for three years before her career found its footing. The park she ran through every morning. The apartment she had made into something that was completely and unmistakably hers.

She was excited. She was also, underneath that, quietly devastated in the way you can be devastated by something that is exactly right for you.

I did not want to give her something that said goodbye. I wanted to give her something that said you are taking us with you.

She had a wall in her apartment that she called the map wall. Not a literal map, just a collection of small things from places that had mattered to her. A postcard. A ticket stub. A photo printed small and tucked into a corner. It was her way of holding places she had loved.

I found a small framed piece, nothing large, with an illustrated version of our city's skyline. Simple, recognizable. And I got everyone from our friend group to sign the back. Not goodbye messages. Just their names and a small symbol or word, whatever felt true to them.

I included a card that said: for the map wall in Amsterdam. We are going wherever you go.

She stood in her half-packed apartment and held it for a while.

Then she said: this is the one thing I am not packing. I am carrying it.

A going-away gift does not have to be about the going. It can be about the staying. About everything that follows her no matter how far she gets.
