The Milestone Nobody Else Knew to Mark

Some of the most important things that happen to people do not get celebrated.

Not because they are not worth celebrating. Because they are private. Because the person has not told many people. Because the accomplishment is real but the path to it is not a story they are ready to share over dinner or post about or explain to family at the holidays.

My friend Wren had a quiet milestone last spring.

Two years sober.

She had told me when she stopped. She had told almost no one else. Not because she was ashamed, she was not. Because it was hers and she was not ready to make it a thing that other people had opinions about or asked questions about or turned into a recovery story before she had finished writing it herself.

But two years was real. Two years was enormous. It had cost her things and taught her things and remade her in ways that were still becoming clear to her. And nobody was going to acknowledge it except her, alone, because she had not told anyone who would know to.

I knew.

I had been carrying the date.

I did not make a big thing of it. I did not write a speech. I showed up at her apartment on the anniversary with a small plant, the kind she had once said she wanted for her kitchen windowsill but had never bought, and a card that said only: two years. I know what that is.

She held the card and did not say anything for a moment.

Then she said: I was not sure anyone was counting.

I said: I was counting.

You do not have to throw a party to mark something that matters. Sometimes the entire gift is just showing up and saying: I know what today is. I have been keeping track. You are not doing this alone even when it feels that way.
