The Promotion Gift That Acknowledged the Cost

When my friend Yemi got promoted everyone said congratulations and meant it and moved on.

Which is what you do. Congratulations is the correct response. It is also, by itself, a little thin when you know what the promotion actually cost.

Yemi had been working toward this for three years. Three years of showing up early and staying late and doing the quiet unglamorous work of being better than anyone required her to be in a role that did not yet match her capabilities. She had been passed over once, which she handled with a grace I found genuinely impressive. She kept going. She did not complain much. She trusted the work.

When it finally came through she texted me at seven in the morning and the text said only: it happened.

Two words. But I knew what three years of two words meant.

I thought about what she actually needed. Not to celebrate the title. To acknowledge the path. The three years of showing up when it was not being recognized. The passed-over year and what she did with it. The specific kind of persistence that does not announce itself.

I found a leather portfolio. The real kind, the kind you bring into rooms where things matter. I had it embossed with her initials. And I included a card that said: three years of work that nobody saw is now in every room you walk into. You earned this and I watched you earn it.

She called me that evening.

She said she had shown the card to no one, which I understood, and that she had read it four times.

A promotion gift that only celebrates the outcome misses the better story. The better story is the person who kept going when they had every reason not to. That is what deserves to be named.
