The Wedding Gift They Still Talk About

When my friends Priya and Will got married, they had a registry. It was a good one. Practical. Useful. Completely soulless in the way registries always are because they have to be functional for a hundred different people who do not all know them the same way.

I got them something off the registry because I ran out of time and panicked. And then I got them a second thing that was just from me.

Here is why.

Priya and Will met in a very specific place. A tiny bookshop in the neighborhood where they both happened to live at the same time, in a city neither of them grew up in. They have told this story probably a thousand times. He was looking for something. She had already read it. She told him it was not worth his time and then they stood there arguing about it for twenty minutes and then they got coffee.

I commissioned a small illustrated map of that neighborhood. Just a few blocks. The bookshop marked. The coffee place they went to after. The bar where they had their first real date two weeks later. Small enough to hang somewhere easy. Detailed enough to be theirs.

At the wedding, while everyone was holding up their Le Creuset and their nice towels and their matching luggage sets, they held up this little map and the whole table went quiet for a second.

Will said: this is where we started.

That sentence. That is what you are going for.

A wedding is a big event surrounded by big objects. But the things that stay with people are the things that know their particular story. The ones that say: I know how you got here, specifically.
