The White Elephant Gift That Made the Whole Room Stop

White elephant parties operate on an agreed-upon logic: bring something funny, bring something useful, bring something everyone might want, do not overthink it.

I overthought it.

Not intentionally. I just could not stop thinking about the fact that there would be real people in that room, people I knew, and that the game mechanic where everyone steals from each other means the gift that actually gets kept is the one that someone actively wanted enough to take.

I thought: what is the thing that the right person in this room would genuinely want, even if nobody else would.

The party had twelve people. I knew most of them reasonably well. One of them, a woman named Petra, had an obsession I had noticed at every gathering we had both been to. She collected vintage botanical prints. She had them all over her apartment. She talked about them with a specificity that most people glazed over and I always found fascinating. She could tell you the era, the printer, what the illustration got right and what it got wrong.

I found a small vintage botanical print at an estate sale website. Real, not a reproduction. Nineteenth century. A plant she had mentioned specifically once, in passing, as one she had never found a good print of.

I wrapped it.

At the party, when it was unwrapped, Petra went completely still from across the room.

Then she stood up and walked over and looked at it for a long time.

Then she said: where did you get this.

Everyone watched her. Nobody stole it.

She has it in her apartment now. The only thing that came out of a white elephant that year that anyone actually talks about.

You are allowed to give a real gift inside a game. The game is just the wrapper.
